Loading Bays: The Most Dangerous 20 Metres of Your Site
Ask any warehouse manager where their near misses happen and the answer is almost always the same: around the loading bays. It's the one part of the site where HGVs, forklifts, pallets and people all converge in a very small space, usually under time pressure.
The good news is that loading bay risk is highly controllable. Most of what goes wrong comes down to layout, visibility and habit, not luck.
Why loading bays concentrate risk
- Reversing vehicles with restricted visibility and blind spots
- Pedestrians cutting across the bay apron to save time
- Forklifts entering and exiting trailers at speed
- Pallets and stillages staged in undefined areas
- Mixed weather, wet floors and worn surfaces at the threshold
Mark the ground before you write the procedure
Procedures only work when the floor agrees with them. If your traffic management plan says pedestrians walk behind the bays but there is no marked route there, people will keep walking the shortest line.
A well-marked loading area usually includes defined pedestrian walkways set back from the bay apron, hatched exclusion zones directly in front of each dock, numbered bay identification, staging squares for outbound pallets and clearly marked crossing points where routes have to intersect vehicle movement.
Protect the structure, not just the people
Dock frames, columns, bollards and racking legs near loading bays take a constant beating. Energy-absorbing barriers and column guards keep impacts away from the structure, and they also stop small collisions escalating into structural surveys and shutdowns.
The condition of the threshold matters
The slab immediately inside and outside a dock door wears faster than anywhere else in a building. Spalled edges and potholes cause pallet damage, shock loading through forklift masts and trip hazards for anyone on foot. Repairing early is far cheaper than repairing after the concrete has broken up.
A five-minute loading bay check
- Can a pedestrian reach every door without crossing an unmarked vehicle route?
- Are all bay numbers and exclusion zones still clearly visible from a driver's seat?
- Is there impact protection on every column, frame and service run within striking distance?
- Is the concrete at each threshold sound, level and free of spalling?
- Are staging areas marked, or do pallets just end up wherever there's space?
If you answered no to any of those, that's your next job. Loading bay work is usually fast, can be phased around shift patterns and delivers one of the highest safety returns per pound spent on site.

Walkways are typically marked at least 1 metre wide, and wider where two-way foot traffic or trolley movement is expected. The key point is that the route must be continuous and set back from reversing vehicles.
