A more durable system for external yards, loading areas, car parks and service roads where adhesion and long-term performance matter. Our recommendation: On external concrete, Fastline specifies a fully primed MMA resin system rather than conventional thermoplastic. MMA chemically cures, bonds more reliably to concrete and is engineered to withstand traffic, weather and moisture for a much longer period.
Why thermoplastic can fail early on concrete
Hot-applied thermoplastic performs best on bituminous surfaces such as tarmac, where the binders are more compatible. Concrete is porous, can retain moisture and presents a very different surface chemistry. Manufacturer guidance describes concrete and cement-bound surfaces as generally not ideal for thermoplastic road-marking materials.
Even where a specialist thermoplastic primer is used, laitance, curing compounds, salts, alkalis, dust or residual moisture can interfere with the bond. If moisture becomes trapped at the interface, changes in temperature and freeze-thaw conditions can create blistering and stress between the marking and the concrete.
Why the first winter often exposes the problem
Water expands as it freezes. Repeated wetting, frost and thawing can place stress at the surface and bond line, while wider seasonal temperature changes cause the concrete and marking to move differently. Add turning HGV wheels, braking forces and contamination, and the weakest point can become the bond between the thermoplastic and the slab.
- Typical signs: Blisters, cracks, lifted edges, flaking and large sections releasing in sheets.
- On busy external concrete yards, this can begin to become visible after around 12-18 months.
- That is not a universal lifespan, but it is a recognised risk on unsuitable, damp or heavily trafficked concrete substrates.
Important distinction: Thermoplastic is not a poor material. It remains an excellent and cost-effective option on suitable tarmac or asphalt. Our recommendation is specific to external concrete where strong adhesion, weather resistance and long-term durability are the priorities.
Why MMA is the better system for concrete
MMA (methyl methacrylate) is a two-component, cold-applied reactive resin. It cures through a chemical reaction to create a dense, exceptionally hard-wearing surface layer with excellent abrasion resistance. In practical use, the cured system remains highly resistant to surface wear, even in locations where regular traffic begins to polish the surrounding concrete, provided the substrate is sound and correctly prepared.
MMA systems are specifically designed to bond to concrete and to perform under heavy traffic, UV exposure, extreme weather, oils and de-icing salts. The combination of adhesion, abrasion resistance and chemical curing is what gives MMA its long service life.
The Fastline four-stage application system
- Prepare the substrate — The concrete is assessed and cleaned, with loose material, contamination and failed existing markings removed where required to create a sound surface.
- Fully prime the concrete — A compatible primer is applied across the complete marking area to penetrate the porous surface and create the correct bond for the MMA system.
- Apply the MMA resin — The two-component MMA is mixed and applied at the specified thickness. It cures rapidly by chemical reaction, rather than simply cooling and hardening.
- Finish with reflective glass beads — Glass beads are dressed into the wet MMA so they become embedded in the surface, improving night-time retroreflectivity while also contributing texture and slip resistance.

The result: A crisp, highly visible and durable marking system that is better matched to the concrete substrate and requires fewer renewals. Although MMA costs more initially, the reduction in remarking, closures and operational disruption generally delivers stronger whole-life value.
A note on service life
Every installation is affected by slab condition, drainage, standing water, contamination, traffic volume, turning movements and maintenance. No marking system can correct a failing concrete substrate.
