How Long Does Warehouse Line Marking Last?
It's the question we're asked most often: how long will my line marking last? The honest answer is that it varies hugely — from a few months for cheap paint in a high-traffic aisle, to several years for properly specified thermoplastic or MMA. Three factors decide where you land on that scale.
1. The material
Material is the single biggest factor. Thermoplastic is a hard-wearing, fast-setting system ideal for warehouse floors and roadways. MMA (methyl methacrylate) cures quickly even in low temperatures and bonds exceptionally well, making it excellent for external and high-traffic areas. Both far outlast standard line paint, which can wear or fade within a single season under forklift traffic.
2. Surface preparation
Even the best material fails early if it's applied to a dirty, dusty or contaminated surface. Proper preparation — cleaning, priming and ensuring the floor is dry — is what allows the marking to bond and stay put. Cutting corners on prep is the most common reason markings lift prematurely.
3. Traffic and environment
A marking in a quiet storage zone will outlast the same marking in a busy turning area where forklifts scuff and twist on it constantly. Outdoor markings also face UV, frost and standing water. We assess your traffic flow and environment on survey so we can specify a system that matches the wear it will face.
Making markings last
- Specify thermoplastic or MMA rather than paint for high-traffic areas.
- Insist on proper surface preparation before application.
- Inspect markings regularly and refresh worn lines before they disappear.
- Use anti-slip or high-build systems where grip and durability are critical.
Frequently asked questions
How long does thermoplastic line marking last?
With proper surface preparation, thermoplastic markings can last several years even under heavy forklift and vehicle traffic. Exact lifespan depends on traffic volume and surface condition.
Why do my floor markings keep wearing off?
The usual causes are cheap paint instead of thermoplastic or MMA, poor surface preparation, or markings placed in high-wear turning areas. The fix is the right material on a properly prepared surface.
Can you refresh markings without redoing the whole floor?
Yes. We can refresh specific worn lines or areas, working around your operation, rather than re-marking an entire warehouse.
