Why internal marking is a compliance control, not decoration

In a UK distribution centre, the floor is the primary interface between people and moving vehicles. The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 require traffic routes to be organised so pedestrians and vehicles can circulate safely and to be suitably indicated, and the HSE consistently identifies workplace transport as one of the largest causes of serious warehouse injury. Internal line marking is the cheapest, fastest and most visible way to deliver that segregation.

Designing the layout

Good schemes start with observation, not a CAD drawing. Before anything is specified, we watch how the site genuinely operates: where people cut corners, where MHE and foot traffic converge, where trailers queue, and where the desire lines run between offices, welfare areas and the shop floor. Marking against the intended flow rather than the real one guarantees non-compliance within weeks.

Traffic segregation and one-way routes

  • Give pedestrians a continuous, unbroken route from every entrance to every work area, so nobody has to improvise.
  • Bound vehicle aisles clearly and use directional arrows plus give-way markings wherever routes converge.
  • Introduce one-way circulation in narrow aisles and around pick modules rather than relying on drivers negotiating.
  • Keep walkways off the inside of blind corners; route them where sightlines are longest.

Walkway widths and crossing points

Walkways should be wide enough for two people to pass comfortably while carrying items — as a working rule of thumb around 1.2m minimum for two-way foot traffic, wider on main arteries and where trolleys or pallet trucks are used. Crossings should be deliberately limited in number, marked at points with the best mutual visibility, and reinforced with signage and, where risk justifies it, physical guarding.

Blind corners and pinch points

Column lines, dock ends, battery-charging bays and racking runs create the pinch points where most near-misses happen. Hatched exclusion zones, stop lines and hold points on the floor slow traffic before the conflict, not after it. Pair markings with mirrors or projected signage where the geometry cannot be changed.

Loading bay and yard-interface control

Loading bays combine reversing HGVs, moving MHE and pedestrians in the smallest area of the building, which is why they attract the most audit findings. A controlled bay has clearly marked trailer positions, exclusion zones behind reversing vehicles, a safe marked pedestrian access route to each dock, and defined staging areas so inbound and outbound stock never encroaches on traffic routes.

  • Hatched no-go zones directly behind dock doors during reversing operations.
  • Marked, protected pedestrian route along the dock face, kept clear of staged pallets.
  • Defined inbound, outbound and quarantine staging footprints, sized to actual peak volumes.

Mixed traffic sites

Most UK distribution centres cannot fully separate people and vehicles, so the marking scheme has to establish priority instead. Give pedestrians priority on the routes they must use, give MHE priority in aisles and require pedestrians to use defined crossings, and use buffer markings at pick faces so operatives can step back from racking without stepping into an aisle.

  • Pedestrian priority: main arteries, welfare access, office-to-floor routes.
  • MHE priority: goods aisles, dock approaches, battery and refuelling areas.
  • Buffer zones: pick faces, decant benches, wrapping stations and print stations.
  • Colour consistency: one convention for the whole building, applied to every future patch repair.

Specifying a durable industrial floor marking system

Material choice is where budgets are won and lost. The cheapest option almost always costs more across a three-year cycle because of repeat closures. Use this as a starting point, then let a site survey confirm it against your substrate and traffic.

Installation, preparation and working live

No marking material outperforms its preparation. Laitance, dust, oil, tyre rubber, curing compounds and residual moisture are the four most common causes of premature failure, and all of them are avoidable. Our internal installations follow the same sequence every time.

  • Survey and set out — confirm layout against live traffic observation, agree the scheme, and mark out for sign-off before any material is applied.
  • Prepare the footprint — grind or shot-blast the marking area to remove contamination and open the surface for adhesion.
  • Prime where required — apply a compatible primer to porous or previously coated substrates.
  • Apply and finish — apply at specified thickness, add anti-slip aggregate where needed, and protect until cured.
  • Handover — record the scheme, materials and dates so it feeds straight into your maintenance and audit records.

Controlling downtime

Phasing keeps the operation running. We work zone by zone, out of hours or across shift changeovers, and prioritise rapid-curing systems in areas that cannot be closed. Maintenance and the re-marking cycle

Markings degrade unevenly. Aisle ends, turning circles, dock approaches and pick faces wear several times faster than open floor, so inspect by zone rather than judging the whole building on its best-looking area.   • Quarterly: visual inspection of high-wear zones, photographed and logged.
  • Annually: full-site marking review against the current racking and traffic layout.
  • On change: re-mark whenever racking, mezzanines, pick modules or dock use change.
  • Always: match materials and colours to the existing scheme when patching.
