Warehouse Asset Management

Key takeaway

A clear asset register is the foundation of any planned safety programme.

Who it's for

Facilities managers and asset owners.

What Is Warehouse Asset Management?

Warehouse asset management is the practice of recording, assessing and maintaining the safety-critical infrastructure of your site, line markings, impact barriers, signage, flooring and structure, as a managed portfolio rather than a collection of disconnected items. Done well, it tells you what you own, what condition it is in, and what needs attention next.

It is the foundation of CIPLAN and of every planned programme. You cannot prioritise, budget or schedule work you have never recorded.

Start With An Asset Register

Begin by building a register of safety-critical assets with their location, condition and expected life. A good register captures enough detail to drive decisions without becoming a burden to maintain:

  • Asset type and location, mapped to a site plan where possible
  • Install or last-renewal date
  • Current condition against a consistent grading standard
  • Expected remaining life
  • Last inspection date and any outstanding actions

Assess And Grade Condition

Survey every asset against the same standard so results are comparable across the site. A simple traffic-light grade, good, monitor, action needed, is enough to drive prioritisation and is easy for non-specialists to apply during routine checks.

Prioritise By Risk

  • Rank assets by safety risk and operational impact, not just age
  • Schedule action by priority and budget cycle
  • Flag compliance-critical items for immediate attention
  • Group nearby work to reduce downtime and mobilisation cost

Racking is one of the most safety-critical asset classes and has its own inspection regime, see our insight on how often warehouse racking should be inspected and the SEMA racking inspection guidance.

From Register To Programme

An asset register is most valuable when it feeds a plan. Use it to forecast renewal through lifecycle planning and to build a defensible safety improvement budget.
