How Often Should Warehouse Racking Be Inspected?
HSE expects a competent person to inspect racking at least every 12 months, with trained staff carrying out regular visual checks in between and damage reported immediately.
Warehouse managers, PRRS inspectors and H&S leads.
What The Rules Actually Say
There is no single law that states an exact inspection interval, but the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, PUWER 1998 and SEMA guidance together set a clear expectation. SEMA recommends an expert inspection by a technically competent person at least once every 12 months, supported by more frequent in-house checks.
The Three Levels Of Inspection
- Immediate reporting: any operator who spots damage reports it straight away
- Visual inspections: a trained in-house PRRS (Person Responsible for Rack Safety) checks weekly or monthly
- Expert inspections: an independent competent person inspects at least annually
What Drives Racking Damage
Most racking damage comes from forklift impact. Tight aisles, poor visibility and shared people and vehicle space all increase the risk. Reducing impact at the source is far cheaper than replacing damaged frames, which is why traffic separation and protection matter so much.
Faded floor markings around racking ends and aisle intersections also make impacts more likely, see our insight on why faded floor markings are a bigger risk than you think for the detail.
